Cold Brew
The optimal coffee-to-water ratio for cold brew depends on how strong you want it. Here are two common ratios:
Cold Brew Concentrate (Strong):
1:4 ratio (250g coffee per 1L water) – This creates a concentrate that can be diluted with water or milk before drinking.
Ready-to-Drink Cold Brew (Mild):
1:8 to 1:10 ratio (100–125g coffee per 1L water) – This is a more balanced, smooth cold brew that you can drink as is.
For best results:
Use coarse-ground coffee (like sea salt texture).
Brew in the fridge or at room temp for 12–24 hours.
Filter and enjoy!
Pour Over
Standard Ratio (Golden Cup Standard):
1:16 ratio → 15–16g coffee per 250g (ml) water
Example: 30g coffee for 500g (ml) water
Stronger Brew (More Intense Flavor):
1:15 ratio → 16-17g coffee per 250g water
Lighter Brew (More Diluted):
1:17 ratio → 14-15g coffee per 250g water
Pro Tips for a Great Pour-Over:
Use medium-fine grind (like sea salt).
Water temperature: 195–205°F (90–96°C).
Bloom first: Pour a small amount of water (twice the weight of the coffee) and let it sit for 30–45 seconds before continuing the pour.
Total brew time: 2.5–3.5 minutes, depending on grind size and flow rate.
Traditional Drip
Standard Ratio (Golden Cup Standard)
1:16 ratio → 10g (about 2 tbsp) coffee per 160g (ml) water
Example: 60g coffee for 1 liter (1000ml) water
Stronger Brew
1:15 ratio → 10g coffee per 150g water
Example: 67g coffee for 1 liter water
Lighter Brew
1:17 ratio → 10g coffee per 170g water
Example: 58g coffee for 1 liter water
General Brewing Tips:
Use a medium grind (like sand) for even extraction.
Water temperature: 195–205°F (90–96°C) for best extraction.
Brew time: 4–6 minutes depending on the machine.
Use filtered water for a cleaner taste.
Grind Information
Coarse Grind (Like Sea Salt)
Best for:
Cold Brew (Slow steeping prevents over-extraction)
French Press (Prevents too much sediment)
Percolator (Prevents bitterness)
Grind setting: Largest setting on a burr grinder
Brew time: 12–24 hours (cold brew), 4 minutes (French Press), 7–10 minutes (Percolator)
Medium-Coarse Grind (Like Rough Sand)
Best for:
Chemex (Slows down flow rate, giving clarity)
Clever Dripper (Balance between steeping and filtering)
Grind setting: Slightly finer than French Press
Brew time: 3.5–4.5 minutes
Medium Grind (Like Beach Sand)
Best for:
Drip Coffee Machines (Mr. Coffee, Bonavita, etc.)
AeroPress (With longer brew time: 2–3 minutes)
Siphon (Vacuum Pot)
Grind setting: Middle range on a burr grinder
Brew time: 4–6 minutes
Medium-Fine Grind (Like Table Salt)
Best for:
Pour-Over (Hario V60, Kalita Wave, etc.)
AeroPress (Shorter brew time: 1 minute or less)
Grind setting: Slightly finer than drip coffee
Brew time: 2.5–3.5 minutes (pour-over), 1–2 minutes (AeroPress)
Fine Grind (Like Powdered Sugar)
Best for:
Keurig
Espresso (Fast extraction under high pressure)
Moka Pot (Stovetop Espresso)
AeroPress (Short, intense brews)
Grind setting: Almost the finest setting, but not quite espresso powder
Brew time: 20–30 seconds (espresso), 1–2 minutes (Moka Pot), 30 seconds (AeroPress fast method)
Extra Fine Grind (Like Flour)
Best for:
Turkish Coffee (Ultra-fine for unfiltered brewing)
Grind setting: Finest setting possible on a burr grinder
Brew time: Boiled 2–3 times in an ibrik (cezve) over low heat
Pro Tip: Always grind fresh right before brewing for the best flavor! Need help with grind settings for a specific coffee maker?
